“Don’t Swallow My Heart, Alligator Girl!”, a Brazilian feature film directed by Felipe Bragança and starring Cauã Reymond will represent Brazilian cinema at the World Cinema Competition of the 2017 Sundance Festival. The film tells a story of a young love and has as backdrop the disputes of land on the border of Brazil with Paraguay. The screenplay is by Felipe Bragança, inspired by tales of Joca Reiners Terron.
The film, which will be making its world premiere, was shot in 2015 in the city of Bela Vista – Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil, is the debut of the carioca 35 year old director as solo project – known for his films in partnership with Marina Meliande (“The Joy”, which was at Cannes 2010) and as screenwriter of Karim Ainouz’s films (as in “Futuro Beach”). The cast mixes professional actors with local non-actors. Other well-known names of the cast are Leopoldo Pacheco, Cláudia Assunção and Ney Matogrosso (as special guest).
“Don’t Swallow My Heart, Alligator Girl!” is a production of the carioca Duas Mariola Filmes, in co-production with Globo Filmes, Canal Brasil, Mutuca Filmes and producers from France and Netherlands.
The World Cinema Competition is the main window at Sundance for films produced outside the US, and the competition has productions from various countries. The festival takes place between January 19th and 29th in Park City – Utah. The film is expected to debut in Brazil in the second half of 2017.
